Overview #
The Collect phase focuses on gathering reliable and consistent data from machines, sensors and production systems. This phase is essential for creating visibility within the factory environment and forms the foundation for analytics, reporting and process optimisation.
Purpose of the Collect Phase #
The goal of the Collect phase is to capture data directly from operational equipment in a structured and dependable way. Modern factories often contain many different brands and generations of machines. FactoryNebula devices unify these differences by translating machine specific protocols into a standard format that can be used throughout the platform.
Collecting Data from Industrial Equipment #
During the Collect phase the edge device communicates with machines through industrial protocols. These protocols include a wide range of commonly used communication methods from PLCs, CNC machines, robots and sensors. The device reads values such as production counters, machine states, cycle times, quality data and temperature readings. By supporting various protocols the platform can interact with both new and legacy equipment.
Normalising and Structuring Data #
Raw machine data is often fragmented or designed for specific hardware. The edge device converts incoming values into a consistent and structured model. This normalised data model allows analytics and applications to work with the same variable names and data formats regardless of the machine type. The result is an environment where dashboards, analysis tools and cloud applications can operate without custom integration for every machine.
Ensuring Data Quality and Reliability #
Data collection includes integrity checks that verify the availability and correctness of the values. When a device detects communication errors it automatically reconnects or retries the operation. This ensures that gaps in the collected information are minimised. The device also records timestamps and state changes so that events can be reconstructed accurately.
Local Processing and Buffering #
FactoryNebula devices can process data locally before sending it to external systems. This may include filtering, simple logic operations or combining multiple values. If a network connection becomes unavailable the device stores collected data temporarily and sends it once the connection is restored. This guarantees continuity even in unstable environments.
Outcome of the Collect Phase #
After completing the Collect phase the system possesses a stable flow of structured and reliable data. This data can then be used for monitoring, dashboards, predictive analysis, reporting or continuous improvement initiatives. The Collect phase therefore acts as the bridge between operational equipment and the digital environment.
